The Guide Book

Printed Guide Book

There is now a choice of guide book formats to choose from. You can purchase this traditional bound and printed guide book, which contains all the information needed to plan and walk the route, including all the maps and route descriptions. Or see below for the electronic version of the book.

The printed edition of the book is 126 pages, weighs approx. 120g and is 18cm high and 11cm wide, perfect for fitting into a jacket pocket, or the side pocket of a pair of trousers.

This edition is priced at £10.00 (inc P&P to the UK) and includes a free version of the electronic guide described below. The printed version of the guide book is for clockwise walkers only. There are no route descriptions for anti-clockwise walkers.

I'm happy to ship to customers outside the UK as well, all you need to do is select your location from the drop-down list on the Buy Me page.

Electronic PDF Guide

The electronic version of the guide book is for anti-clockwise walkers only. Unfortunately, the vast majority of walkers complete the route clockwise and it doesn't make economic sense to create a printed version for anti-clockwise walkers. However, the electronic version comes with instructions on how to produce a functional printed guide on your home printer.

This version comes in three sections;

Section One is a detailed planning guide, helping you to make all the decisions about where to stay, where to eat, what to take with you, when to walk and so on. Once you've made all these decisions however, you may not need to carry this section of the guide with youa s you walk.

Section Two is the walk description; a turn by turn guide to finding the path, choosing the right branch in the track, identifying some of the surrounding scenery and historic buildings. Every gate, every stile, every change of direction is detailed in this section of the guide.

Section Three is a series of hand-drawn maps at a scale detailed enough to use as you walk along the route. If you don't like to read directions as you travel, then you can use the maps to guide your way.

Look Inside

We've extracted some short sections of the guide book to give you a feel for what you can expect. Click on each of the images below to view the extracts. They will open as PDF files, so you will need a PDF viewer to read them. Alternatively you can right click the thumbnail and download the file locally for viewing later.

The content is similar for both the printed version and the electronic version. Of course, the route descriptions and maps are different.

Mobile Guide Book

You may want to view this guide book on a handheld mobile device; on a PDA for example, or on an iPhone or other smartphone. The following notes may help this process.

On an iPhone

The PDF reader built into the iPhone works surprisingly well. It's quick and responsive and it supports zoom and landscape mode, which is the best way to view the guide book as it spans the width of the page.

With the recent introduction of iBooks you can now load the PDF version of the guide book into your iBook Library, using iTunes. Then access it as you would any other on-line book.

On an Android handset

It seems that the Android OS does not come with a native PDF viewer, but not being an Android user I can't definitely confirm this one way or the other. As such you are going to need a third party PDF viewer to access the Herriot Way Guide Book on this OS.

The most popular third party PDF viewers for this plaform are;

You may be able to find others by searching on Google, or other Internet search engines.

On a Symbian handset

There is no native support for PDF in the Symbian OS either, so it will be necessary to download a third party application or program to view the PDF files of the Herriot Way Guide Book on your Symbian handheld device. Fortunately, Adobe have a free PDF viewer for the 3rd Edition Symbian OS. Click here.

This product supports page rotation and zooming, both of which will be very useful for viewing the files on a relatively small screen.

On a Windows Mobile PDA or handset

Walkers with a Windows Mobile (previously called PocketPC) handheld device are probably best served of all mobile platforms. A whole slew of third party products are available for viewing PDF files on this platform. The one most people may prefer to use is that provided by Adobe. Click here.

Many others are available though and a quick search on Google should throw up plenty of hits.
